Residents invited to attend Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 28
The Village of Lombard is inviting residents, Veterans of the Armed Services, and local scouts to attend this year’s annual Memorial Day program, Monday, May 28 at 12 p.m., at the Sunken Garden at Common Park, located just east of the intersection Grace St. and Maple St. in Lombard.
Members of the Lombard Veterans of Foreign Wars Lilac Post #5815, the Lombard American Legion Memorial Post #391, Lombard Historical Society, local scouts, students of Glenbard East High School, and local residents will be participating in the program. This year’s ceremony will pay tribute to the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI.
The featured speaker of the day will be Dennis McNicholas, who will read a poetic selection pertaining to the end of WWI.
There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Lombard Memorial Marker, which contains the names of Lombard residents who served or were killed in the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II and Vietnam War. No Lombard residents are recorded as being killed in the Korean War. The program will include buglers from Glenbard East High School, and songs from Glenbard East Eastwind Vocal Ensemble, and the Glenbard East WAVE under the direction of Brandon Catt and Tara Cappalleti and Marissa McLean. Attendees and nearby residents are reminded that approved cannon fire, provided by Stanford’s Battery Civil War Cannon, is included in the ceremony.
After the program is completed, all attendees are strongly encouraged to visit with present veterans. The Lombard Historical Society will also be on site with historical items from WWI, weather depending.
Due to limited parking and seating, attendees are asked to walk to the program, if they are able, and to bring a lawn chair if possible.
In the event of severe weather, the Village’s Memorial Day Program will be held indoors in the Community Room at Lombard’s Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave, and updates will be posted at www.villageoflombard.org and on the Village’s Social Media pages. Contact Communications Coordinator Avis Meade at (630)620-5718 with questions.
Village Offices will be closed on Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day.
