On Saturday, December 3, Lombard Police Officers will bring 10 children holiday shopping for their family members, as part of Lombard’s Annual Shop with a Cop program, sponsored by the Lombard Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA).
During this event, Lombard Officers pick up the children from their homes and will drive them in a procession of emergency vehicles to shop at Target. The children are provided a light breakfast from Target and proceed pick out items for their families, with help from Lombard Police Officers. They then returned to Village Hall where they were greeted by Lombard Police K9 Officer Chico, as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus. LCPAAA volunteers helped to wrap the gifts in festive paper and hosted a pizza lunch. At the end of the event, the children were driven home in squad cars filled with gifts, trays of cookies, gift baskets, and donated items.
“This is just one of those events where the whole community can rally around and support,” said Sgt. Joe Menolascino. “Giving back is what the holidays are all about. We're so grateful that we get a chance to give back to these Lombard families.”
The purpose of Shop with a Cop is to foster positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. The LCPAAA selects the children based on the child’s good character, hard work at school, and other factors. The LCPAAA funds this program through community events throughout the year as well as soliciting funds, selling merchandise, and receiving donations from area merchants. Donations addressed to the Lombard Police Department are also received through the mail. Anyone interested in donating to this event should call the Lombard Police Department's non-emergency number at (630)873-4400.
