ALERT: Water Main Breaks

Due to extremely cold temperatures, there are several water main breaks that are currently being tended to by Public Works.

UPDATE 1/5/18: Public Works has completed the repair of the main located in the commuter lot located at 50 E. St. Charles Road. The commuter lot will be open Monday morning for commuters with the exception of spaces at the location of the dig. These spaces will be barricaded and commuters should not try to park in these spaces.

UPDATE 1/4/18: Repairs to the water main breaks on Main St. and Harrison, and at 240 N Westmore have been completed and the water is back on for both. Crews are finishing up backfilling the holes and cleaning the areas up.

The break in the commuter parking lot by the Central Reservoir on St. Charles has been isolated and a repair plan is in progress. Half of the parking lot is still blocked off due to ice and the unknown extent of the stability of the pavement due to potential wash out from the water.

Locations include Harrison Rd & Main Street, 50 E. St. Charles Rd., and 240 N. Westmore Ave. The updates below will be updated as information is made available. Please be cautious when navigating these locations. Although all locations will be heavily salted, ice is likely due to the extreme cold. Water mains break during extremely cold temperatures when the air temperature at or below freezing causes the ground above a pipe to freeze. This causes external stress on the pipe underground, which can cause breaks. This usually occurs after several days of severe cold.

Harrison Rd & Main: This water main break will be fixed first thing Thursday morning following utility locates in accordance with JULIE requirements. The north bound curb lane of Main St. is closed between Main Drive and Harrison. Icing is bad at this location and barricades have been in place around the intersection. The water from this break has flooded nearby AT&T ducts, which have caused surcharging at various points along Main Street, specifically across from Glenbard East High School.

50 E. St. Charles Rd: This leak has been isolated, but has caused damage to the commuter parking lot. A few parking spots will be closed until repair is possible. JULIE has been called and debris is being removed from the lot.

240 N. Westmore Ave.: A hydrant has leaked and will be fixed when the water main breaks above have been completed.
