Sam’s West LLC has announced its decision to abandon its previously approved plan to construct a new Sam’s Club warehouse grocery store at 625 E. Butterfield Road, Lombard.
“Sam’s Club has made a final decision to not move forward with building a Club in Lombard,” said Kevin Thompson, Director of Public Affairs & Government Relations with Walmart Corporate, the parent company of Sam’s Club. “We intend to work with the property owner to identify a subsequent tenant for the property.”
The Village of Lombard has been collaborating with Sam’s Club and the property owner since 2014, in order to advance the opening of a Sam’s Club warehouse store in Lombard. This action is a part of a much larger national shift in strategy that will also result in the closing of existing stores as well. Per the Sam’s Club statement released on their Twitter page today, “After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy.”
An Economic Incentive Agreement for the Sam’s Club and a companion fuel station, were approved by the Lombard Village Board in March of 2016. Zoning entitlements were also approved and demolition of an office building and the former TGI Friday’s Restaurant occurred in 2016. Engineering permits for the project were completed in 2017 and the project has been set to move forward. Ultimately Sam’s Club decided to respond to the changing nature of retail business and chose not to move forward with the project.
Fortunately for the Village, the property’s high profile location along the Butterfield Road corridor will lend itself to another use that will contribute to the economic strength of the Village. Please contact Community Development Director William Heniff at email@example.com with any questions concerning the project.
