The Village of Lombard’s 2018 spring tree planting program is scheduled to take place during the first few weeks of April.
During the Spring 2018 planting program, contractors will plant 384 new trees of a wide variety of species, to help boost the diversity and overall health of Lombard’s tree population.
Locations that have been scheduled to receive trees have been marked with a painted white line on the adjacent curb. The contractor will be calling in underground utility locates (JULIE) in advance of the planting and the final planting site may need to be adjusted based upon underground conflicts. Contractors will be planting Monday – Thursday, with Fridays used as makeup days pending weather conditions. The program includes the planting of 384 trees from 3 local nurseries. Planting a variety of trees helps to reduce the impact of potential species specific diseases or pests. This planting season represents the conclusion of the Village’s three year program to replace Ash trees that had been removed due to a regional infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer insect. The Village will continue planting replacement trees for those trees lost to mortality, storm damage, underground utility work and vehicle accidents in future planting seasons.
Residents have been notified of the tree planting program and were asked to choose a tree of their preference, from a list of approved trees, to be planted in their parkway. Twenty of the 265 residents who received tree choice letters opted out of tree planting. Those trees will be used to replace trees that had been removed on various roadway median strips and other locations throughout the village.
Village of Lombard’s Public Works’ Forestry staff will be adding mulch to new trees on the day they are planted, and will deliver a “New Tree Care” door hanger listing the species of tree(s) which was planted at that time. Several locations will be receiving multiple trees, and residents are reminded that they may arrive at different times, depending upon the nursery of which they are purchased. For more information please call Public Works at (630)620-5740 or visit www.villageoflombard.org/parkwaytrees.
