Village’s Local Tourism Grant program helps fund 2018 special events

The Village of Lombard has completed its Local Tourism Grant awards for 2018. More than $30,000 was granted to community groups for events that support Lombard as a tourist destination.

Grant awards include a number of traditional Lilac Time events, as well as other local events & programs such as local sporting events, festivals, and historical reenactments.

Programs and organizations approved to receive grant funding include: the Lilac Festival Parade Committee, for honorariums paid to parade participants for the Lilac Time Parade; the Glenbard East Boosters for the Lombard Ale & Food Truck Fest; the Lombard Historical Society for the Civil War Reenactment; the Lombard Firebirds Soccer Club for a multi-day, regional tournament; the Lilac Princess Program, sponsored by the Junior Women’s Club, for support the selection of the Lilac Court and their honorariums, as well as their participation in numerous seasonal events; the Annual Lilac Time Art and Craft Fair, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, for Village related support services to host the event on St. Charles Road; and the Lombard Garden Club, for the purchase of a portion of the Lilacs for their three day sale during Lilac Time and the funding of a local scholarship program.

The money used to fund the grants is generated by overnight stays in Lombard hotels through the hotel/motel sales tax, not general fund tax revenues. Hotel/motel tax expenditures are restricted to promotion of tourism and overnight stays.

Grants are intended to provide reimbursements for event expenses, which may include Village services such as Police overtime, barriers and road closures provided by Public Works, or on site EMS/Fire Department presence. The Village of Lombard’s Local Tourism Grant Program was developed by the Village through the Community Promotion and Tourism Committee, and provides funding for local programs and events that encourage overnight, non-resident visitors to the Village of Lombard. Applicants must be organizations seeking to produce and promote a clearly defined festival, program or convention that attracts tourism and overnight visitor stays in Lombard. The purpose of the grant program is to provide support for local tourism programs, attractions, and events to enhance the marketing of the Village of Lombard to visitors.

“The events we support through our Lombard Tourism Grant program are some of the most popular events for our community,” said Trustee and Chair of the Community Promotions and Tourism Committee Mike Fugiel. “It would be impossible for the Village of Lombard to plan and host so many wonderful community events each year and it simply is not one of our core governmental services. This grant program helps us to support these kinds of events, and our local not-for-profit organizations in bringing these events into our life and bringing visitors into our community.”
