In honor of the Village’s commitment to effective urban forest management, Lombard has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 29th year.
Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Lombard achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
To recognize Lombard’s ongoing Tree City USA status, a ceremonial tree planting will take place Friday, April 26, at 9 a.m., at the Lombard Village Complex, 255 E Wilson Avenue, just east of the intersection of E Wilson and Holloman Drive on the rise behind the sign. The Village will be planting several hybrid American Chestnuts.
Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.
