Throughout the month of May, National Recognition dates have been established, honoring those who pursue a career in public service. The Village thanks its staff for their dedicated public service to the residents and community of Lombard.
National Firefighter’s Day, May 4
International Firefighter’s Day is annually observed on May 4, in honor of five Australian firefighters who died in a brush fire. International Firefighter’s day recognizes firefighters who have lost their lives in service are honored.
The Lombard Fire Department serves to protect the lives and property of the citizens and visitors of the Village of Lombard. Firefighters are focused on fire prevention, public education, advanced life support emergency medical services, and emergency disaster service. National Public Service Week: May 5 – 11
Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) honors the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees. The Village extends its thanks and appreciation to the valued employees and colleagues that serve Lombard.
National Economic Development Week: May 6 - 11
Economic development is a process that influences growth and restructuring of an economy to enhance the economic well-being of a community. In the broadest sense, economic development encompasses policies and programs that focus on improving the business climate, business finance, marketing, neighborhood development, business retention and expansion, technology transfer, real estate development and others.

National Police Week: May 12 - 18
Communities across the United States recognize National Police Week, to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. Lombard Officers who were killed in the line of duty include John Frost, killed Sept. 1936; Allan Mollsen, killed Sept. 28, 1986; and Louis Schuetz, killed July 30, 1933.

National Public Works Week: May 19 - 25
In accordance with the tradition of the American Public Works Association, those who work in professions that provide and maintain public facilities and services are honored during National Public Works Week.
Public works professionals include those who manage water, sewer, public transportation, and refuse removal systems as well as those responsible for maintaining public buildings and grounds. National EMS Week: May 19 - 25
The theme for the 2019 National EMS Week is “EMS Strong: Stronger Together.” In 2018, the Lombard Fire Department responded to 7,425 calls for service. Of those calls 5,412 were EMS runs. The Lombard Fire Department continues to be one of the busiest in DuPage County and requires all of its firefighters to also be EMS certified.
