At last night’s Village Board Meeting, two ordinances regarding video gaming were considered on first reading, and were initially approved by the Village Board.

The ordinances were read on separate action and Village Board members provided comments and feedback. As both ordinances were approved on first reading only, they will both be brought before the Board for second/final consideration on April 4, 2019.

One ordinance proposes amending the Lombard Village Code to allow video gaming for 12 months, with certain conditions and restrictions. Authority to conduct video gaming granted under the ordinance would automatically expire at the end on July 1, 2020. Without further Board action at or before this time, video gaming would no longer be allowed in Lombard. In order for video gaming to continue beyond this time, the Village Board would need to affirmatively pass legislation to approve or continue video gaming. The automatic sunset provision of this ordinance will allow residents, business owners, and the Village to observe how video gaming impacts Lombard, before making a decision continue gaming or allow the right to gaming to sunset.

The second ordinance proposes that a non-binding advisory public question concerning video gaming to be placed on the ballot for the general primary election to be held on March 17, 2020. The purpose of having a referendum placed on the March 17, 2020 ballot, would allow residents the opportunity to cast a vote as to whether or not they believe video gaming should be permitted in Lombard. These results would provide useful information for the Village Board to consider.
