Severe Weather Preparedness Month

In efforts to help residents plan ahead for severe weather, Lombard is recognizing Illinois Severe Weather Preparedness Month by sharing tips and safety information throughout March, and by reminding citizens to connect with the Village for information during emergency situations.

Severe weather can happen anywhere, at any time, creating potentially life-threatening situations. During extreme weather emergencies, the Village of Lombard will communicate to citizens through the following resources:

Messages are not restricted to weather events and may contain potentially lifesaving information in the event of any emergency situation. Text messages and email alerts are especially useful for residents who are on the go, and not likely to be home to receive a phone call from emergency telephone systems. For timely alerts and weather warnings, residents should connect directly with weather reporting resources including the National Weather Service Forecast Office of Chicago and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency.

“Last year a tornado impacted our community, proving that we can’t control when severe weather will strike. The important thing is that we take the time to prepare ahead of time,” said Lombard Fire Chief Rick Sander. “In the event of an emergency, we will use the communications resources we have available to us, including our website and social media, to communicate important information. I encourage all residents to take a moment and connect with us.”

Disaster Supply Kit
In August 2020, Lombard was impacted by a tornado that caused a 2-mile long path of damage. Police and fire responded to 198 emergency calls in 24 hours and over 1,000 parkway trees were damaged. Large trees were snapped and uprooted, causing power outages that lasted several days. Are you ready for the next weather emergency? Now is a good time to create or update your disaster supply kit in case of thunderstorms.

Turn Around Don't Drown!
Thunderstorms can produce heavy rain, which may lead to flooding. Motorists should NEVER drive through flood waters. It only takes 6 inches of flowing water to knock over a person, and 12 inches to carry away a car. If you can’t see the road, Turn Around Don’t Drown!
