[ARCHIVED] Lombard Cycling Classic Returns to Downtown Lombard July 20th

The Lombard Cycling Classic will take place in downtown Lombard, on Tuesday, July 20, from 10 a.m. – 8:15 p.m., with road closures beginning at 6 a.m. This family friendly event is part of a 10-day nationally-renowned bicycling event series, The Intelligentsia Cup Chicago, which runs from July 16 – 25 at various locations in the Chicago area. The event is hosted by the DuPage County Convention and Visitors Bureau, includes several hundred professional and amateur road cyclists competing in races throughout the day on a designated course through downtown Lombard, and will bring national attention to the Lilac Village. 

On Tuesday, July 20, residents and visitors are invited to witness a series of thrilling, high-speed bicycle races, beginning at 10 a.m. Throughout the day, South Park Ave. will offer an expo area including fun activities and booths from vendors and the Lombard Park District. Restaurants and businesses will be open for business and guests are reminded to support Lombard businesses whenever possible. 

Visitors may find parking in the Parkside Metra Commuter Lot south of the train tracks, and on-street parking in the surrounding area. The Hammerschmidt Lot is the designated location for bicyclists and volunteers. (Click map to view full size)

Lombard Cycling Classic Public Map updated

The Kids & Family Community Ride is at 6:15 p.m. Pre-register your family to be entered to win a family pass to Brookfield Zoo at bit.ly/familybikerace. Participants are required to bring their own bicycles, wear helmets, and meet at the registration tent no later than 6 p.m. to check in and sign waivers.

Detour Routes 

No vehicles will be able to access or cross the race route after detours are put in place at approximately 6 a.m., and commuters are reminded to plan ahead for traffic delays. St. Charles Road will be closed from Elizabeth through Main Street, including the intersection of Main Street & St. Charles Rd. The underpass at Main Street and the track crossing at Elizabeth Street will be closed. In order to cross the railroad tracks, vehicles must use the crossings at either Crescent Blvd., or Grace Street. East and westbound St. Charles Road traffic will be detoured north to Grove Street. North and southbound Main Street traffic will be detoured east to Grace Street. The last race ends at 8:15 p.m. and road closures will be in place until the race route has been cleared by public safety personnel. (click map below to view full size)

Residents & Businesses Within Racing Route

Residents within the racing route (between St. Charles & Michael McGuire and Main & Elizabeth) will be allowed on-street overnight parking outside of the race area in order to have access to their vehicles. Pedestrians will be able to cross the race route on foot at designated race crossing locations and times.
