On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Lombard Police Department and the Lombard Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA) held their 24th annual Shop with a Cop event. This event helps Lombard Police spread holiday cheer to local families.
Lombard police officers picked up the children from their homes and they were escorted in a convoy of squad cars to go Christmas shopping. The children shopped for gifts at Target and DICK'S Sporting Goods in Lombard for their parents and family, with help from Lombard police officers. Once the shopping was completed, the group returned to Lombard Village Hall, where they wrapped their gifts, met with Santa Claus and enjoyed lunch before heading home.
"The Lombard community is second to none in neighbors helping neighbors," said Chief Roy Newton. "This event helps bring joy to children in our community and is also a wonderful way for our officers to build relationships and trust with local families during the holidays."
At the end of the event, the children were driven home in squad cars filled with gifts, trays of cookies and gift baskets. This event is made possible by DICK'S Sporting Goods and fundraising efforts of the Lombard Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, Lombard FOP #270, and donations from local businesses and individuals.
"The smiles and happiness we see this event bring the children encourage us to build upon this event year after year," commented Sergeant Sherie Eakins.
Anyone wishing to donate to next year's Shop with A Cop event can do so by dropping the donation off at the Lombard Police station or mailing it to the Lombard Police Department at 235 E. Wilson Ave, Lombard, IL, 60148; to the attention of Sergeant Eakins.
