Communities across the United States recognize National Police Week, to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. Lombard Officers who were killed in the line of duty include John Frost, killed Sept. 1936; Louis Schuetz, killed July 30, 1933; and Allan Mollsen, killed Sept. 28, 1986.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

A Memorial service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of survivors and supporters of law enforcement. It became commonly known as National Police Week, which has grown to a series of events that attract thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to the Nation’s Capital each year.
