Cold Weather Safety

Help Prevent Frozen Pipes
In extremely cold temperatures, Public Works responds to many calls for frozen pipes. To avoid this situation it is advisable to let the water run at a constant trickle until the temperature rises. Lower lake water temperatures combined with cold air movement around plumbing fixtures can create freezing in water lines. Under these conditions, water can freeze in the lines in just a couple of hours. Residents can help prevent frozen pipes by following these tips.

Water Main Breaks During Cold Weather
The Village of Lombard's Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair for approximately 195 miles of underground water mains. While most of these water mains do not freeze, when temperatures are well below twenty degrees outside, freezing soil may shift when it contracts, causing pipes to move and increasing the likelihood of a water main break and subsequent repair.

Dressing for Cold Weather
In extreme cold, frost bite can happen in just minutes. If you must go outside in cold temperatures, make sure you and your family are dressed for the elements.

Political Sign Restrictions

With the upcoming Consolidated General Election on Tuesday, April 6th approaching, the Village of Lombard is reminding both businesses and residences of regulations pertaining to political campaign signs located within the Village.

Adopt a Hydrant This Winter

Residents are encouraged to “Adopt a Fire Hydrant” near their home, to make sure hydrants are easily accessible to firefighters during fire emergencies. When clearing a fire hydrant, snow should be removed about 3 feet away from the hydrant in all directions with a pathway cleared between the hydrant and the roadway. Please exercise caution when shoveling.

Support Local Restaurants and Businesses

Region 8, including Lombard, has moved to Phase 4 of the State of Illinois Restore Illinois Plan, which includes decreased restrictions on indoor dining. Residents are strongly encouraged to choose to dine and shop locally whenever possible. It is our hope that residents will recognize the importance of supporting local businesses at this important time.

Customers should expect to comply with social distance and should continue to wear masks in situations when a minimum of 6’ of social distance cannot be maintained.
