Protect your Family: Change your Clocks, Change your Batteries

As residents “spring” forward and move their clocks up one hour for daylight saving time this Sunday, March 13th, the Lombard Fire Department reminds residents to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to help keep their loved ones safe.

“The bi-annual changing of time is the perfect opportunity to make sure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are up-to-date and in working order,” commented Fire Marshal Perry Johnson.

To help make sure all smoke alarms have working batteries, based on the type of smoke alarm, follow these smoke alarm safety tips.

This St. Patrick’s Day, a Designated Driver is Your Lucky Charm

As we head into St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the Lombard Police Department is reminding motorists that they will be out in full force to keep our roads safe from impaired drivers.

“This St. Patrick’s Day, make your own luck by designating a sober driver,” said Traffic Safety Unit Patrol Officer Dan Herrera. “If you’ll be drinking, using cannabis or partaking of any other impairing substance, planning ahead is the best way to ensure you and your friends make it home safely.”

In addition to looking for alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, the Lombard Police Department will be stepping up seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat-belt usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving and other traffic laws will also be strictly enforced.

Reminders for Metra Riders Partaking in Chicago St. Patrick's Day Festivities

Due to Metra's expectation of high ridership on the Saturday of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Metra personnel will be checking tickets and requiring ticket purchases prior to boarding at downtown terminals. Customers are advised to purchase tickets in advance, and ticket agents will staff some outlying stations Saturday to accommodate purchases.

Alcohol is banned on all Metra trains on Saturday. On Saturday, March 12, bicycles also will not be permitted onboard. Customers are asked to not bring backpacks or water bottles on the trains all weekend and should also expect slower boarding at stations due to increased passenger loads and train crews taking extra time to ensure everyone’s safety.

Backyard Chicken Permits Now Available

On March 3, 2022, the Village Board approved an ordinance that allows residents to keep chickens (hens) in the rear yards of their single-family home, with a permit issued by the Village.

Residents must obtain a permit to raise hens.  An application can be found HERE and requires the following:

  • A plat of survey showing the chicken coop location and setbacks from the property lines

The permit has a $50 fee. Permit recipients will be contacted by the Village each year to ask if they would like to renew their permit. There is no fee to renew.
