The Village of Lombard has named current Lombard Deputy Police Chief Roy Newton as its next Chief of Police.
At the time of his promotion to Chief, Newton had already served the Village of Lombard for 31 years. He began his law enforcement career as an Explorer Cadet and Community Service Officer with the Lombard Police Department, before being sworn in as a Lombard Police Officer in 1995. Newton, who was born and raised in Lombard, rose through the ranks as a Sergeant and Lieutenant, and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2013.
“It is my absolute honor to be my hometown’s Police Chief,” said Chief Newton. “I’m privileged to work with our dedicated police officers, and I will keep our department moving forward with an ongoing commitment to improved community relations and policing techniques.”
Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio said Newton’s qualifications and dedication to the Village of Lombard, with more than 31 years of experience in police service, was impressive.
“Our Police Department has a great reputation with our residents, neighbors, and area departments. This decision only helps to reinforce that,” said Trustee Dan Whittington, Chair of the Public Safety and Transportation Committee. “Given his credentials and his history with Lombard, Roy Newton is a perfect fit for our community.”
Newton is a member of the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association and serves as the Chairman of their Legislative Committee. Additionally, Newton is an Operations Section Chief for the DuPage County Incident Management Team and Chairman of the DuComm Police Operations Committee, and has previously served as a program coordinator and instructor for new recruit officers at the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.
Newton succeeded Ray Byrne, who retired from the position of Lombard Police Chief in July 2017, after serving the department for 15 years.
