Notify Me: Residents and property owners are encouraged to sign up for Notify Me to receive timely updates regarding controlled/prescribed burns in their area.  Signs will be posted in advance at the various burning sites.

Refer to the Village Web Page concerning Controlled/Prescribed Burns:  https://villageoflombard.org/334/Controlled-Burns

Maintenance site visits occur weekly

Project Information

Detention Pond Vegetation Maintenance
Includes: Controlled burns occur in the spring when weather conditions are favorable and application of selective herbicide in April, May, June, July and September.
In 2026 Echo Pond and the Grace and Central pond will be overseeded with a specialized Stormwater specialty seed mix designed for saturated soils in detention ponds and basins. Six flats of wetland native flowers will be planted.
Locations include:

  • Grace and Central
  • Echo Pond (across from Glenbard East High School)
  • Morris Pond
  • Terrace View Pond
  • Parker & Kaplan Basin
  • Hammerschmidt Commuter Parking Lot
  • Central Pressure Adjusting Sation parking Lot (across the street from the Hammerschmidt Lot)
  • Village Complex Pond
  • Surges Centre (Salt Dome Area located at the dead end of North Garfield Street)

Traffic Impact: Minor, works and equipment will be parked in legal areas during daylight hours

FAQs

How does this benefit me?   This portion of the Detention Pond Maintenance Program focuses on enhancing and managing native vegetation. The program encourages the growth of native plants that are well-adapted to local soil, hydrology, and climate.  They require no watering and show resistance to drought, insects, and most diseases. Benefits of native vegetation include ecosystem diversity, improved stormwater quality, and support for pollinators. Vegetation management activities include:

  • Removal of woody species
  • Application of herbicides
  • Supplemental seeding
  • Controlled burns

Will my road be closed? No.
If my driveway is inaccessible, where do I park?  Access is not anticipated to be affected.
Will my water or sewer service be affected? No.

Project Information

Detention Pond Water Surface Maintenance
Includes: Weekly inspection Village owned wet bottom detention ponds between April 1st and September 30th. Work will include treatment (as necessary) of any submerged weeds, duckweed/watermeal, and algae. Observations of the drainage, erosion, fertilizer usage, storm runoff, vegetation, fishery, and wildlife activity will also be performed. Dissolved oxygen readings, PH, and temperature readings will also be taken.
Locations include:

  • Morris Pond
  • Terrace View Pond
  • Village Complex Pond

Traffic Impact: Minor, works and equipment will be parked in legal areas during daylight hours

FAQs

How does this benefit me?

1. Water Quality & Nuisance Control

  • Algae & Weed Management: Prevents oxygen depletion that leads to fish kills and foul odors (sulfur smells) that often trigger complaints.
  • Pollutant Filtration: Healthy native vegetation and balanced water chemistry help the pond act as a natural filter, stripping out nitrogen and phosphorus from lawn fertilizers before the water moves downstream.

2. Infrastructure & Flood Protection

  • Drainage Integrity: Weekly checks ensure that inlet and outlet pipes aren't blocked by debris or trash. This prevents localized flooding during heavy rain events.
  • Erosion Control: Identifying bank erosion early allows for simple fixes (like supplemental seeding) before it becomes a massive structural failure that requires expensive re-grading or rip-rap installation.
  • Water Chemistry Trends: Regular readings of Dissolved Oxygen (DO), pH, and temperature provide a baseline. If a sudden spike in pH or drop in DO occurs, the Village can quickly investigate potential illegal dumping.

3. Long-Term Cost Savings

  • Proactive vs. Reactive: It is significantly cheaper to apply a small amount of algaecide or fix a small gully weekly than it is to perform a major pond dredging because the pond is filled with organic muck and subject to collapsed banks.
