At approximately 10:09 a.m., on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, the Lombard Fire Department was dispatched and responded to a structure fire in the 600 block of E. Western Avenue in Lombard. Upon the arrival of first arriving companies, it was discovered that there was an apparent fire inside a warehouse/processing space of a mixed-use commercial building with the sprinkler system activated and installed alarm sounding. Observed smoke and on-scene reports from self-evacuated employees allowed firefighters to quickly locate the fire.
Interior fire crews discovered that two sprinkler heads had activated and kept the fire contained to the area of origin, preventing it from spreading to any other areas of the building. Initial attack crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly with the assistance of the sprinklers.
Due to early detection and activation of the alarm and sprinkler system, the damage was kept to a minimal amount to building and contents of the affected space. No reports of injury to civilians or fire personnel were reported.
The Lombard Fire Department was assisted by the Addison and York Center Fire Protection Districts along with Elmhurst and Villa Park Fire Departments. All questions should be forwarded to Battalion Chief Greene at the Lombard Fire Department.
