With the fall colors now coming down, residents are asked to help clear fallen leaves from storm drain inlets to prevent street flooding. Lombard Public Works operates two street sweepers that do their best to remove leaves that have fallen directly onto streets. Raking or blowing leaves into a street is unlawful, and violations may be reported to Code Enforcement at (630) 620-5757, codeenforcement@villageoflombard.org, or through this link. Residents may take advantage of the free six-week leaf collection starting November 7th.
Keeping leaves away from storm sewers benefits waterways by preventing the phosphorus in decomposing leaves from contributing to algae blooms, which decreases oxygen available for fish. Rather, mulching leaves provides essential nutrients for your lawn, trees and bushes. Residents may also take advantage of the Village’s Compost Bin Reimbursement Program to create rich soil to use throughout the year on house plants and gardens.
