After a distinguished law enforcement career spanning more than three decades, Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton has announced his retirement after 37 years with the Department. His last day as chief will be March 1, 2023. Chief Newton will be succeeded by Deputy Chief Tom Wirsing.
Newton has served as Lombard’s police chief since 2017, overseeing the department of approximately 78 staff members and directing all its operations and programs. During his tenure, he has embraced best practices and innovative methods of policing, prioritized officer morale and well-being, and has provided steadfast and dependable leadership to the men and women of the Lombard Police Department. In addition, he has been a long-standing member of the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association, currently serving as President of the Association.
“Chief Newton has been a tireless advocate for public safety and a strong leader for our department,” said Village President Keith Giagnorio. “His unwavering commitment to making our community safer will be missed, but we are grateful for his many years of service and wish him a well-deserved retirement.”
The Village has announced that upon Chief Newton’s retirement, Deputy Chief Tom Wirsing will be sworn in as the next police chief. Wirsing brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Lombard Police Department and has served the Lombard Police Department for over 28 years. During his time, he rose through the ranks as a Sergeant and Lieutenant before being promoted to Deputy Chief in 2011. As deputy chief, he has been an integral component of the Police Department’s growth and professional management.
“I have full confidence in Deputy Chief Wirsing’s ability to lead our Police Department with his extensive experience and proven track record,” said Trustee Brian LaVaque, Chair of the Public Safety and Transportation Committee. “I look forward to working with him to continue building a stronger and safer community.”
