[ARCHIVED] Halloween Drive Sober Enforcement Campaign

The Lombard Police Department urges drivers to commit to sober driving this Halloween as children and their families walk through neighborhoods after dark in search of candy and spooky fun. If you plan to enjoy Halloween festivities, make sure you also plan for a safe, sober ride home.

From October 18 to November 1, 2024, Lombard Police will have increased enforcement on the roads to crack down on drunk and impaired drivers. "Halloween is spooky enough without adding impaired driving to the mix," commented Police Sergeant Tom Balsitis. " Alcohol and cannabis impair your ability to drive safely and make responsible decisions. Planning ahead, driving sober and buckling up will help keep you and others safe."

Drivers are reminded that it is illegal in Illinois to drive impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other impairing substance. DUIs are not restricted to alcohol-related offenses. While cannabis may be legal for adults, if you drive high, you’ll still get a DUI.

Lombard Police urge everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe this Halloween:

  • Plan for a safe and sober way home before you go out:
  • Designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member.
  • Remember, walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired. Designate a sober friend to we if needed.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as you can safely do so.
  • If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.
  • Always buckle up - it's your best defense against impaired drivers and accidents.

While Lombard Police arrest impaired drivers year-round, this increased Halloween enforcement and awareness campaign is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
