Reuse & Recycle Over the Holidays

Community Updates Posted on December 17, 2024

As we celebrate the holiday season with friends, family and loved ones, let's help make a positive impact on our environment by following these guidelines for responsible disposal of holiday items:

  • Christmas Trees & Garland: Trees and garland will be collected for free by Waste Management on your normal service day from January 6th to 7th.  Remove all ornaments, lights, wiring, and tinsel.
  • Light Strands: Drop off your light strands in front of the Public Works building at 1051 S Hammerschmidt 24/7 through January 15th. No plastic bags or yard ornaments, please!
  • Gift Wrap: Gift wrap is only recyclable if it is 100% paper (tape is fine). Plastic and foil wrap, ribbons, and bows should either be reused or placed in the trash.
  • Cardboard Boxes: Fold cardboard boxes to fit within your cart, and avoid placing carts in the street to ensure smooth plowing operations.
  • Styrofoam & Plastic Film: Not recyclable curbside! Dispose of these items as trash or drop them off at specialized recycling locations. Some religious institutions host Styrofoam collections, and community recycling events are also organized.
  • Give Back: Consider donating unneeded gifts or unexpired canned foods to local community organizations. Refer to this Local Reuse and Recycling flyer for more options and information.
