Residential HomeBox Program

Knox HomeBox being shown mounted to a wall and what the interior of looks likeThe Lombard Fire Department participates in the Knox HomeBox™ program, which helps emergency responders gain quick, secure access to a home during a medical emergency.

When firefighters or paramedics are called to assist someone inside a home, valuable time can be lost if they are unable to enter right away. The Knox HomeBox™ allows residents to securely store a house key in a locked box outside the home. During an emergency, Lombard Fire Department personnel can access the box using a secure master key system, allowing for faster entry while helping prevent damage to doors or windows.

This program is especially beneficial for:

  • Older adults
  • Individuals who live alone
  • Residents with disabilities
  • People who use medical alert services
  • Anyone recovering from a hospital stay

Residents interested in participating can purchase a Knox HomeBox™ directly from the manufacturer. The box requires a one-time purchase with no monthly fee and is available in both permanent mount and door-hanger options.

After installation, residents should contact the Lombard Fire Department to ensure the box is properly registered and accessible to emergency personnel.
